In ancient Greek poet Homer's Iliad, the legendary warrior Achilles was not invulnerable: the Paeonian warrior Asteropaios threw two spears at him, and one grazed his elbow and drew blood. No surviving source before the first century AD describes Achilles as generally invulnerable. The earliest surviving explicit River Styx version appears in Roman poet Statius's unfinished Achilleid, in which Thetis dips her son in the river but leaves the heel she holds untouched.
