Anorexia Patient Reached Record-Low BMI

A 2022 medical review reported a BMI of 6.7 in a patient with anorexia nervosa, the lowest value documented in the medical literature it examined. Mathematically, that BMI equals approximately 39 pounds at 5 feet 4 inches (17.7 kg at 163 cm), or 49.5 pounds at 6 feet (22.5 kg at 183 cm). The review classified any BMI below 15 as extreme and warned that anorexia can cause complications throughout the body's organs and systems, creating a high risk of death.
