17th-century French king Louis XIV could reportedly trace his ancestry to 13th-century king Louis IX, better known as Saint Louis, through 368 different genealogical paths. Repeated marriages and heavy inbreeding between related members of European royal families caused the same ancestral branches to reappear throughout Louis XIV's family tree, a phenomenon known as pedigree collapse.
