Charles XII's Drunken Bear Died

During one of the drunken episodes surrounding Swedish king Charles XII and his companions, a bear was forced to drink wine until it fell through a palace window and died in the courtyard below. Charles, who was heavily intoxicated that night, vowed afterward never to drink strong alcohol again. He reportedly kept that promise, with only a few exceptions, for the rest of his life.
