George Never Learned Charlotte Died

Queen Charlotte died at Kew Palace in November 1818 while her gravely ill husband, King George III, remained isolated at Windsor Castle. Her state coffin rested beneath a canopy in Kew's dining room before being carried to Windsor. Officials covered the castle's cobbled courtyards with straw so George could not hear his beloved wife's funeral procession. He was likely unaware of his wife's passing.
