Toward the end of his life, William the Conqueror reportedly became so heavy that his horse visibly struggled beneath him. King Philip I of France mocked William's size by comparing his confinement to that of a woman after childbirth. In 1087, William tried to slim down by remaining in bed, refusing all food, and consuming only alcohol.
