Infantry Comprised Just Fourteen Percent

Only about 14 percent of the manpower in the Allied armies fighting the Normandy campaign served as infantry, while another 6 percent crewed tanks. About 45 percent performed logistical, medical, administrative, and other rear-area functions. Much of the rest served in artillery and other combat-support arms, with gunners alone comprising 18 percent of the British force in Normandy.
