Omaha Beach Sand Contains Shrapnel

The fighting on D-Day was so intense that microscopic pieces of shrapnel remain mixed into the sand at Omaha Beach. In 1988, geologists collected a single sand sample near the war memorial, and later analysis indicated that shrapnel made up 4% of that particular sample.
