In 2012, Papa John's faced a class-action lawsuit seeking more than $250 million over roughly 500,000 unwanted promotional texts that its franchises allegedly sent in early 2010. Some customers reported receiving 15 or 16 messages in succession, including during the middle of the night, after franchisees used a mass-texting service. U.S. District Judge in Seattle certified the nationwide class action, while Papa John's denied responsibility and announced plans to appeal.
