Arc de Triomphe Flag Returned

Arc de Triomphe Flag Returned

During the 1944 liberation of Paris from the Nazis, an American soldier stole the 12-meter (13-yard) French flag hanging from the Arc de Triomphe and took it home. He kept it for 65 years before returning it to Paris in 2010, but he remained anonymous because he felt too ashamed to come forward. Paris City Hall officials accepted the flag during a ceremony in southern France and thanked the veteran because he had once risked his life for France.
