NASA data has shown evidence of caves under the Moon that could offer future astronauts shelter from radiation. In 2024, scientists reexamined radar data gathered by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2010, and found evidence of a cave extending more than 200 feet from a pit in Mare Tranquillitatis, some 230 miles northeast of the first human landing site. Scientists believe the tunnel was carved by ancient lava under a hardened surface, and its full length can stretch for miles. A shelter built under a deep overhang would also protect astronauts from micrometeorites, dust and extreme temperature variations.
