Instant Coffee Won Blind Taste-Test

In a 2025 blind taste test conducted by culinary and sensory scientists at Drexel Food Lab in Philadelphia, 77% of 44 participants chose an instant coffee versus only 23% who picked drip coffee. Testers compared eight instant products to drip coffees from Folgers, Stumptown and La Colombe brewed by machine, rating them on attributes such as bitterness, texture, flavor and aftertaste. None of the drip coffees finished first, and the overall winner was Illy Intenso Bold Roast.
