Plague Lids Protected Beer Steins

Plague Lids Protected Beer Steins

European beer steins with pewter lids date to the 14th century bubonic plague, when fly invasions raised sanitary concerns. German authorities required that drinking vessels be covered, and craftsmen began fitting pewter lids to the stoneware mugs that were being developed. The covered design kept flies out of drinks and stayed common for the next 300 years.
