Plague Vow Sustained Oberammergau's Theater

According to legend, the Bavarian village of Oberammergau vowed on October 28, 1633, to perform a Passion play every 10 years if God spared it from bubonic plague, which had reportedly killed 81 residents, half the population, in 33 days. Reportedly nobody died after the vow, and the villagers staged their first performance in 1634. The village continued the tradition with several exceptions, and COVID-19 delayed the scheduled 2020 production until 2022.
