After the Black Death ended in 1353, plague repeatedly returned across Europe and the Mediterranean through the 17th century. The second plague pandemic became especially widespread in 1360-1363, 1374, 1400, 1438-1439, 1456-1457, 1464-1466, 1481-1485, 1500-1503, 1518-1531, 1544-1548, 1563-1566, 1573-1588, 1596-1599, 1602-1611, 1623-1640, 1644-1654, and 1664-1667. Cairo alone suffered more than 50 plague epidemics within 150 years of the disease's arrival in 1348. Later outbreaks remained severe, but plague retreated from most of Europe during the 18th century and North Africa during the 19th.
