Iron Hand Kept Berlichingen Fighting

In 1504, cannon fire struck the sword of German knight Gotz von Berlichingen during the siege of Landshut and drove it into his right arm, costing him his hand at the wrist. He commissioned two iron prostheses, including a mechanically complex hand with leather straps, springs, and articulated fingers that he could lock into position. The device allowed him to grip swords, shields, reins, and even a writing quill. Berlichingen continued fighting as a mercenary for another 40 years, completing his final military campaign in 1544.
