Edward I Exhausted Guards' Horses

Edward I Exhausted Guards' Horses

Before becoming King Edward I of England, Prince Edward became a prisoner of his rebellious uncle, Simon de Montfort. Edward asked his guards for permission to race their horses, then spent the day riding them one pair at a time. When he reached the final fresh pair, Edward mounted one horse and fled, while the exhausted animals could not carry his guards after him. Shortly after escaping, Edward defeated Simon in a bloody battle in 1265.
