At the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, Scottish king Robert the Bruce killed English knight Sir Henry de Bohun with a single strike from his battle-axe. De Bohun charged with a lowered lance after spotting the lightly armored king on a small horse, but Robert swerved aside at the last moment and drove his axe through the knight's helmet. Robert reportedly expressed only sadness that the blow had broken his axe handle.
