Golden Rice Grains Produce Beta-Carotene

Golden Rice is a genetically modified crop designed to improve nutrition and fight malnutrition in low-income regions where rice forms a major part of the diet. Ordinary rice grains contain neither vitamin A nor its precursors, so scientists inserted genes that allow the grain to produce beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. The beta-carotene gives the rice its golden color.
