Egyptian Workers Staged First Strike

In around 1170 BCE, ancient Egyptian tomb workers staged what is considered the first recorded labor strike in history after their grain wages repeatedly arrived late. The workers stopped working, left their assigned jobs, and demanded that the authorities deliver the rations they were owed. Because such organized labor action was unprecedented, officials struggled to respond and ultimately provided much of the overdue payment, although additional strikes followed when shortages continued.
