While Alexander the Great conquered an enormous empire stretching from Greece to Egypt and India, he never personally attacked the city-state of Sparta. Sparta had refused to join the Macedonian-led League of Corinth, and while Alexander campaigned in Asia, Spartan King Agis III rebelled against Macedonian control. In 331 BCE, Alexander's regent Antipater defeated the Spartans at the Battle of Megalopolis, where Agis was killed, bringing the revolt to an end without Alexander himself ever marching on Sparta.
