Marshmallows trace their origins back roughly 4,000 years to ancient Egypt, where a sweet treat was made using sap from the mallow plant, which naturally grows in marshes. Egyptians mixed the plant's sap with nuts and honey, and the treat was considered so special that it was reserved for gods and royalty. The name "marshmallow" itself comes from the marsh-growing mallow plant, although modern marshmallows eventually replaced mallow root with gelatin.
