The Great Wall of China stretches for more than 20,000 kilometers across northern China and was built, rebuilt, and expanded over many centuries to defend against raids and invasions. Despite its enormous scale, it never consistently prevented enemies from entering China. Invaders sometimes broke through, bypassed weak sections, or exploited political divisions, and in the 17th century the Manchus crossed the defenses and eventually established the Qing Dynasty.
