Researchers discovered 26 previously unknown bacterial species living in NASA spacecraft assembly clean rooms despite stringent efforts to keep the facilities biologically clean. Scientists sequenced 215 bacterial isolates collected during the Phoenix spacecraft mission and found that 53 strains belonged to novel species capable of surviving conditions shaped by rigorous cleaning, low humidity, radiation, and limited nutrients.
