Alan Napier Barely Knew Batman

British actor Alan Napier had never read comic books and did not even know who Batman was when his agent offered him the role of Alfred Pennyworth in the 1966 Batman television series. Napier recalled thinking it was "the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard of," until his agent told him, "It may be worth over $100,000," prompting him to reply, "So I said I was Batman's butler." Napier became the first actor cast for the series and went on to play Alfred in 111 episodes from 1966 to 1968.
