Brian Robson Mailed Himself Home

In 1965, a man named Brian Robson could not afford the trip home from Australia to Cardiff, Wales, so he had friends seal him inside a 36 x 30 x 38-inch wooden crate and ship him from Melbourne as air freight. His plan called for a direct 36-hour journey to London, but a full connecting flight diverted the crate through Los Angeles, stretching his confinement to 92 hours. During the ordeal, workers left the crate upside down for 22 hours, and the cold, lack of movement, and awkward positioning caused Robson to suffer badly and repeatedly lose consciousness. Officials discovered him in Los Angeles, where he spent several days recovering in a hospital before authorities deported him to Britain.
