In his later years, former Alabama governor George Wallace personally apologized to civil rights pioneers Vivian Malone Jones and James Hood, the two Black students he had tried to block from entering the University of Alabama in 1963. Hood later spent hours interviewing Wallace and believed that his remorse over supporting segregation was sincere. When Hood earned his PhD in interdisciplinary studies from the university in 1997, he asked Wallace to present the degree, but Wallace was too ill to attend. Wallace died in 1998, and Hood attended his funeral.
