In the early 1990s, Nintendo and Sony developed a CD-ROM system called the PlayStation that could play both Super Nintendo cartridges and disc-based games. Nintendo abandoned the partnership after disputes over licensing and control, and the hybrid console never reached stores. Sony then used its experience from the failed project to develop the standalone PlayStation, which launched in Japan in 1994.
