In 1998, McDonald's began expanding its "Made for You" system, ending its 43-year practice of preparing sandwiches in batches and storing them in warming bins. Employees instead assembled each sandwich only after a customer placed an order, producing hotter food and making customization easier. McDonald's introduced the system in about 600 restaurants and planned to install it across all 12,400 U.S. locations by 2000.
