Since 1992, New York City's Department of Environmental Protection has monitored major leaks in the Delaware Aqueduct, which supplies roughly half of the city's drinking water. Cracks near Newburgh and Wawarsing have allowed up to 35 million gallons to escape each day, with most of the leakage occurring near the Hudson River.
