Nets Rejected Their Swamp Dragons

Nets Rejected Their Swamp Dragons

In the mid-1990s, New Jersey Nets president Jon Spoelstra proposed renaming their struggling NBA team to Swamp Dragons, and all seven team owners initially approved the idea. The NBA then spent $500,000 protecting the name and developing logos, uniforms, and other designs. When the league's owners voted, they approved the change 26-1, but the Nets cast the only opposing vote after co-owner David Gerstein got cold feet. The reversal killed the new identity and infuriated NBA commissioner David Stern.
