In 1994, South Korea's Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology reported that the revenue from American director Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park nearly matched the value of exporting 1.5 million Hyundai cars. The comparison showed government officials that films, music, and other cultural products could become lucrative exports. South Korea responded by creating the Cultural Industry Bureau and increasing support for entertainment, helping lay the foundation for the Korean Wave and K-pop's later global success.
