In 1989, South African President F. W. de Klerk's government ended the country's secret nuclear weapons program and dismantled six completed bombs and a seventh still under construction. South Africa joined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1991, and the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the destruction of the weapons in 1994. This made South Africa the only nation to develop its own nuclear arsenal and then voluntarily eliminate it.
