In colonial Virginia, electoral candidates commonly bribed voters with food and alcohol, and George Washington learned that lesson after losing his first run for the Virginia House of Burgesses. In 1758, his election agent distributed about 144 gallons of rum, punch, hard cider, and beer during Washington's second campaign. Washington won the seat.
