Guy Kieffer Vanished Investigating Cocoa

French-Canadian journalist Guy-André Kieffer disappeared from a shopping center parking lot in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, in 2004 while investigating money laundering, illegal currency transfers, and government corruption. He had worked in West Africa and reported on political corruption for various media outlets. CBC journalist Carol Off later linked his probable murder to his investigation of the Ivorian government and the cocoa industry, including allegations around dangerous labor practices in cocoa production. In 2008, Ivorian first lady Simone Gbagbo was called for questioning by a French investigative judge, but Kieffer’s fate and the identity of his kidnappers remain unresolved.
