During World War I, the British Army reportedly noticed that recorded head wounds rose after soldiers began wearing the Brodie helmet. Initially, this appeared to be a failure, as the steel helmet was designed to shield troops from shrapnel and falling debris. The better explanation was that many blows that once would have killed soldiers outright now left them alive with reportable injuries.
