Moroccan Fossil Became Prehistoric Trinket

A 300,000 to 200,000-year-old cuttlefish fossil was found in eastern Morocco in a region where that type of fossil was not native. A German university researcher discovered the 70 mm long fossil fragment in 1984 among a dense cluster of stone tools. Researchers found no signs of carving or shaping, but the fossil naturally resembled a life-size, non-erect human phallus. Because of that shape and its unusual location, the leading interpretation suggests prehistoric humans may have carried it back to camp as a trinket due to its looks.
