After the last Republic of Florence fell to the Medici in 1530, Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo went into hiding for about three months. Nobody knew exactly where he had disappeared until 1975, when workers discovered a hidden chamber beneath the Medici mausoleum in Florence. The room measured about 6.5 feet, or 2 meters, wide, and its walls contained sketches attributed to Michelangelo.
