Raman Booked Nobel Prize Journey

Indian physicist C. V. Raman, who won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering the Raman Effect, was so confident he would receive the honor that he booked steamboat tickets to Stockholm for himself and his wife in July 1930, months before the official announcement. Raman knew that sea travel from India to Sweden would take weeks and did not want to risk arriving late for the Nobel ceremony. His confidence proved justified when the Nobel Prize was announced later that year, making him the first Asian scientist to receive the award in the sciences.
