Austrian-Swedish physicist Lise Meitner was nominated 19 times for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry between 1924 and 1948 and 30 times for the Nobel Prize in Physics between 1937 and 1967, yet she never received a Nobel Prize. Meitner played a crucial role in explaining nuclear fission, working with German chemist Otto Hahn and later providing the first theoretical interpretation of the process with her nephew, physicist Otto Robert Frisch, in 1938-1939. Hahn alone received the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of nuclear fission.
