Bardeen Kept Nobel Prize Promise

Bardeen Kept Nobel Prize Promise

American physicist John Bardeen remains the only person to have received two Nobel Prizes in Physics, winning in 1956 for the invention of the transistor and again in 1972 for the theory of superconductivity. When King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden noticed that Bardeen had brought only one of his three children to the 1956 Nobel ceremony, he asked why the others were absent. Bardeen replied, "I'll bring them all next time," and after winning his second Nobel Prize, he returned to Stockholm with all three of his children, keeping his promise.
