Northern Irish astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered the first pulsars in 1967 while analyzing radio telescope data as a graduate student at the University of Cambridge. British astronomer Antony Hewish initially dismissed the unusual signals before recognizing them as evidence of a previously unknown type of neutron star. In 1974, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Hewish and Martin Ryle, while Bell Burnell was excluded.
