Charles Darwin believed the human menstrual cycle roughly matched the lunar cycle because humans evolved on the seashore and needed to stay in sync with the Moon's tides. He proposed the idea in 1871 in The Descent of Man. Modern research has found no convincing evidence that the menstrual cycle evolved to match the lunar cycle.
