During World War II, the German military deployed a radar and radio navigation system called Wotan to guide its bombing operations. British physicist R. V. Jones suspected the system used a single radio beam because Wotan, the Germanic god after whom it was named, had only one eye. Jones's assumption proved correct, allowing the British to develop effective countermeasures against the system during the Battle of the Beams.
