For centuries, many European cultures used changeling folklore to explain autism, developmental disabilities, and other sudden changes in a child's behavior. According to the legend, fairies, demons, or other supernatural beings would steal a healthy human baby and leave one of their own children behind in disguise. The supposed changeling might cry constantly, avoid social interaction, fail to develop as expected, or become unusually withdrawn.
