Humans become progressively less watery as they age. A newborn baby is about 75 percent water, but that proportion steadily declines throughout life. Adult men are roughly 60 percent water, adult women about 55 percent, and elderly people are often close to 50 percent water. Much of this change occurs because the body gradually loses lean tissue, which contains more water than fat tissue.
