Legless Lizards Evolved Twenty-Five Times

Biologists often point to "carcinization," the process by which different crustaceans independently evolve crab-like bodies, which has happened at least five separate times. But the repeated evolution of legless lizards is even more remarkable. Research suggests that limbless or nearly limbless lizard forms, including snake-like body plans, have evolved independently as many as 25 times.
