On November 18, 1978, members of the Peoples Temple basketball team were away from Jonestown, Guyana, playing a game in Georgetown when the mass murder-suicide unfolded. As more than 900 followers of cult leader Jim Jones died at the settlement, the team remained one of the few groups of Temple members outside the compound. According to survivors, Jones radioed the players and urged them to commit what he called "revolutionary suicide." The team refused.
