Charles Darwin Listed Marriage Pros

Before proposing to Emma Wedgwood, British naturalist Charles Darwin made a written list of marriage pros and cons. On the plus side, he listed companionship, “charms of music,” “female chit-chat,” and even wrote that marriage was “better than a dog.” On the negative side, he worried about anxiety, responsibility, lost freedom, and having less money for books.
