Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdos regularly took amphetamines, which worried his friends enough that one of them bet him $500 he could not quit for a month. Erdos accepted the bet and stayed off the drugs long enough to win. Afterward, he reportedly said mathematics had been set back by a month.
